Making sound effects for games
As an indie-developer I need great sounds to make great experiences. It’s hard to find great sound effects on the internet. All though there is a lot of free sound sites, it’s actually quite a jungle, because you either has to create an account/log in or it’s not free at all or leads you to more or less decent websites.
I recently asked on Twitter if anybody could recommend a great site with packages of sound effects. I got few answers where to find free sounds, but I knew these already, but thanks anyway 🙂
Previously I bought a game sound package on game burp.com
This is great, but when you have used it for a couple of years you start to feel a bit redundant in your pick of sfx. Therefore I was looking for a new package.
But I realised soon, that maybe great sounds has to be made by yourself. I remember a great story about the game company Halfbrick Studios behind Fish Out Of Water, and how they make sound effects themselves.
In this behind the scenes the sounddesigner shows some cool tricks on how to record sound effects yourself.
In the movie industri this procedure is also the way to do it. In this Great Big Story video Foley artist Alyson Moore, Chris Moriana and mixer Mary Jo Lang show how to make great sound effects.
The learning from all this, is that I have to learn to make my own sound effects. And I think this is a great opportunity to actually have fun – it sure looks so when you watch these great artist making sound effects 🙂
